Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) are a building material consisting of an insulating foam core sandwiched between two structural facings, typically oriented strand board (OSB). They are used to construct walls, roofs, and floors in residential and commercial buildings, offering high insulation, strength, and air tightness.
SIPs (panels) form the basis of a smart modular building system. (learn more about this in another blog, ReGen MEGASIP Modular Building system)
Some Limitations of OSB SIPs
OSB consists of wood panel product made by layering thin wood strands or flakes in specific directions and bonding them together.
It can swell, warp and lose strength if left unprotected.
It cannot be the external cladding. It must additionally be clad with other materials that are then coated. Internally, the internal board of the OSB SIP looks like chipboard.
Most people don’t like this for an internal wall, so this has to be lined, typically with plasterboard.
These are additional steps required in the use of OSB SIPs that add cost of additional materials and additional construction time to the building project.
OSB is not currently produced in Australia.
ReGen Building Solutions’ MEGASIP Structural Insulated Panels does NOT use OSB.
It uses high quality Magnesium Oxide boards that are smooth and flat, externally and internally ready for immediate coating. ie Painting, rendering, texture roll, fixing decorative features including brick facings, battens, and so on.
No additional cladding or lining required.
ReGen Building Solutions’ MEGASIP Structural Insulated Panel is manufactured in Adelaide, SA.
